A misplaced paw snapped in steel jaws, meet little Sylvester

Sylvester’s Story

Sylvester was rescued from an illegal steel-jawed rabbit trap and was facing life-threatening injuries.

Trapped and immobilised, Sylvester’s pain was immense, and the damage to his front right leg was utterly devastating.

Removed from the trap, Sylvester was in an extremely fragile condition and urgently needed veterinary care and comfort.

Urgent Medical Treatment and Specialist Care

Sylvester was rushed into care, where the veterinary team assessed the extent of his injuries and developed a treatment plan focused on relieving pain and giving him the best possible chance of recovery.

Despite every effort, the damage to his leg was too severe to repair. To end his suffering and give him the opportunity for a better future, amputation became the kindest option.

Learning To Live Again

Recovery did not happen overnight.

Sylvester required ongoing medical treatment, rehabilitation, monitoring, and plenty of patience as he adapted to life on three legs.

Throughout it all, he showed remarkable resilience.

Day by day, his confidence returned. His strength improved. What began as a story of pain slowly became a story of healing and hope.

Sylvester is now in a loving furever home.

A Second Chance

Today, Sylvester’s future is bright.

His journey is a reminder that even animals facing devastating injuries can recover when given expert care, compassion, and the chance to heal. And because supporters like you make that compassion possible.

The Work Behind Every Rescue

Every day across Tasmania, our inspectors, shelter teams, transport staff, foster carers, and community outreach teams meet animals and people facing difficult circumstances. This can include financial hardship, illness, isolation, or family violence. In helping animals, we are often also supporting vulnerable people to reconnect with safety, stability, and hope.

From emergency rescues and long-distance transport to specialist treatment and round-the-clock care, much of this work happens quietly behind the scenes — but none of it would be possible without supporters like you.
