Pets Aware - Assistance for Victims of Domestic Violence

Puppy

According to recent research, one in three women delays leaving an abusive relationship because they are worried about what will happen to their pets once they're gone. And it's a very real fear. In more than half the cases where women are attacked (approximately 53 per cent), the family pets are harmed too (SOURCE: Monash University, The Relationship Between Family Violence and Animal Abuse: An Australian Study). Most refuges are stretched to their limits caring for the human victims, let alone trying to develop facilities for pets as well.

Fortunately a new programme in Hobart helps adults and children escape domestic violence and/or sexual assault by providng emergency assistance for those much-loved pets.

Pets Aware offers a variety of support services including full boarding costs for an initial four-week crisis period. Costs of vaccinations, which are mandatory for entry into most boarding establishments, may also be covered with pick up and delivery costs included if the owner has no means of transport available.

The RSPCA is just one of six facilities which have chosen to lend a helping hand to those trapped in this vicious cycle.
