RSPCA Happy Tails Day

Happy Tails DayRSPCA Awareness Week is planned for October 1 to 8, and it´s a great opportunity to fi nd out more about Australia´s premier animal welfare organisation. In Tassie, there´ll be events for the whole community
and opportunities to lend a hand.

This year´s theme focusses on how the RSPCA helps people by helping animals.

Across the country many RSPCAs provide shelter and care for the pets of people escaping domestic violence, pets of older Australians or those hospitalised due to chronic illness. Others provide counselling for those coping with pet loss, while some assist in caring for the animals of people affected by the drought. There are programmes providing interaction between young offenders and animals as well.

The RSPCA also educates children about care and treatment of animals which helps them to both develop compassion and safe behaviour around animals. The major fundraising event for the week is Happy Tails Day, which will be held on October 5. Across the State, volunteers will hit the streets to shake, rattle and roll to raise money for RSPCA Tasmania. And you can be part of the fun.

The RSPCA needs outgoing, energetic people to volunteer as Happy Tails Day collectors in a variety of locations. You´ll be working close to home and some may even be able to take their pampered pooches along to keep them company.

To find out more contact your nearest branch.

If you can´t hit the streets, maybe you can organise an event at work or at school, wear your Happy Tails and Ears and raise money for the cause. Merchandise including tails, ears, badges, pens, magnets and toothbrushes will be on sale now at RSPCA shelters as well as a range of businesses across the State including Big W and Bendigo Bank branches...plus

But that´s just the start.

RSPCA Awareness Week this year also coincides with World Animal Day, the Tasmanian tour of the fabulous Education Mobile Unit or EMU and the Blessing of the Animals. And we´re encouraging everyone across the State to get involved.

Schools and community groups can hold a special World Animal Day event, host a morning tea, invite a guest speaker like a vet, wildlife or animal welfare expert, and take up a collection for the RSPCA.

We have created special Paw Pledges on which children can make a personal pledge about the care of animals, decorate in their own way and take it to their local shelter to form a collective display.

That Sunday is also the day earmarked for the Blessing of the Animals, and we´re asking churches to incorporate the Paw Pledge into Sunday School and invite a guest speaker along to discuss animal welfare with the congregation.

If you, your school, your church or your community group would like to be part of the fun of RSPCA Awareness Week, contact RSPCA Tasmania.
