When someone mentions pets, most people think dog or cat, and maybe a bird. But pocket pets are gradually staking their claim in pet circles because they are ideal for people in smaller dwellings, perhaps without a yard, and are in some ways less depending than larger pets.
However just because they are small does not mean they are any less deserving of respect and care. Rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats and hamsters, while regarded as pests by many people, still suffer from inhumane and careless treatment by humans.
For example, rabbits are the fourth most farmed animal in the world, and are often kept in appalling conditions. Some traps for rabbits and rats cause unnecessary suffering. And many people simply aren’t aware of the right conditions in which to keep these animals as pets.
