Report Animal Cruelty 1300 139 947

The RSPCA currently employs seven Animal Welfare Officers (referred to as Inspectors) based throughout Tasmania. They AWOs are appointed under the Animal Welfare Act 1993, to enforce the provisions relating to animal care and management.

Currently, RSPCA Tasmania has a Chief Inspector (based in the South), a Deputy Chief Inspector (based in the South) and five Inspectors, comprising two in the South, two in the North and one in the North West.

The Inspectorate also has its own dedicated Prosecutor (based in Launceston).

Their primary roles are:

  • To investigate complaints of cruelty and neglect.
  • To provide guidance and education to animal owners where necessary.
  • To initiate prosecutions for offences.
  • To issue infringements/penalty notices under the Act

To carry out regular inspections of saleyards, pet shops, abattoirs, livestock export operations, animal boarding and breeding establishments, intensive and non-traditional farms, and all places where animals are kept and used for public entertainment.

Before you contact the RSPCA, try to gather as much information as possible, including:

  • a description of the animal or animals involved
  • the precise location of the animal or animals
  • the name and address of the person you believe may be responsible for the cruelty or neglect and
  • the name and addresses of any other witnesses that may be able to help.

The RSPCA has a dedicated and trained force of Inspectors, and whilst it will endeavour to respond to all complaints as quickly as possible, please remember the RSPCA is a non-Government, community-based charity, and is limited in its resources.

You should report any animal cruelty witnessed in Tasmania.

Phone the animal cruelty Hotline on 1300 139 947, 24hrs per day, for the cost of a local call, or email RSPCA Tasmania Inspectors
