RSPCA signs new Inspectorate Agreement with the State Government

RSPCA Tasmania has recently signed a new service agreement with the State Government to partially fund the Society’s Inspectorate Service on an ongoing, recurrent basis.

President and Launceston Veterinarian Dr Paul Swiatkowski, Interim Chief Executive Officer Angela Ayling and Chief Inspector Paul McGinty welcomed the agreement, highlighting the fact that it demonstrated a commitment by the government to actively enforce the Animal Welfare Act.

‘The Inspectorate Service is an independent operation which acts without fear or favour’, said Ms Ayling. ‘It is responsible for the rigorous enforcement of the Act, and does not hesitate to act where it finds animal abuse. It recognizes the serious consequences to the community of animal cruelty, and as well as enforcement, it also has an educative role, striving to prevent cruelty before it happens’.

Dr Swiatkowski said that the government’s commitment to the Society’s Inspectorate was an indication of a growing confidence in the new RSPCA’s administration.

‘It has been a trying few months for the new board, and especially our Interim CEO, who is carrying out this role without any payment’, he said. But we are certainly getting ‘runs on the board’, with the administrative savings we have made, enabling the appointment of an additional Northern Inspector, and particularly the outstanding success that was “Desex in the City’ in Hobart. We are indeed fortunate in our team of Inspectors, a passionate, and highly committed and professional group who will not hesitate to deal with all cases of animal abuse, no matter how difficult or distressing they might be. This is a win/win situation for the Government and for RSPCA Tasmania’.

“We believe that we have a highly committed, well trained team’, said Chief Inspector Paul     McGinty, ‘and we are ready for the challenges that we know will face us into the future’
