Pre-election positions of Tasmania's political parties
Last month, RSPCA Tasmania President and Launceston veterinarian Dr Paul Swiatkowski, wrote to all three political leaders seeking their positions on a number of animal welfare matters. It is understood that the only party to articulate a full animal welfare policy will be the Tasmanian Greens.
A meeting was held with Greens' Leader Nick McKim, which focussed particularly on the issues of intensive farming, and Mr McKim undertook to provide the Greens' Animal Welfare Policy this month. Mr McKim last year introduced into Parliament a Bill to ban battery cages in egg production, which was voted down by the two main parties.
The Hon Will Hodgman, on behalf of the Parlliamentary Liberal Party, and Premier David Bartlett have provided responses to our questions, which you can read (in the order in which we received them), along with our letter.
