Fighting Cruelty With Cupcakes

Released on Tuesday 14, July 2009

With Cupcake Day for the RSPCA now in its second year, the patty tins will definitely be thrown down on August 17 in the sweetest of challenges – to best the 250,000-strong dainty delights sold in the 2008 inaugural event.

But Cupcake Day is not all chocolate sprinkles and pink icing ... although that’s a major part of it. There is a serious side says RSPCA Tasmania Fundraising and Marketing Co-Ordinator Kalie Parker.

“First and foremost Cupcake Day is about engaging everyone in the community with the RSPCA, and raising awareness about the amazing work the Society does within that community. It will generate essential funds to help the RSPCA combat cruelty in a variety of ways including education, enforcement and, of course, love. We need money to be able to love the unloved and protect the vulnerable who cannot speak for themselves,” she said

“However, it’s also designed to be a fun event that absolutely anyone can take part in, regardless of age. Mums and dads can get the little ones into the kitchen for their first cooking experiences while the senior members of our community can strap on an apron as well and bake to their heart’s content. And then there’s everyone in between.

“Registrations are now open, so we’re encouraging everyone to sign up at www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au and get cooking.”

To be part of the biggest cupcake celebration of the year, the recipe is simple – take one online registration and a cupcake kit, mix in some delicious cupcakes, add some school friends, work mates or family, stir in a dash of cash and the result will hopefully raise stacks of dough for the RSPCA.

There are also some fantastic new competitions in addition to the popular Most Creative Cupcake. Now there’s Extreme Cupcake Eating which challenges people to find the most outrageous place to eat cupcakes as well as a state trophy for the team which raises the most money.

To find out more, or register to be part of the biggest bake off in the Southern Hemisphere on August 17, visit www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au or call 6332 8200 and start your ovens.
